Foreign Language in the Elementary School

Foreign Language in the Elementary School (F.L.E.S.) programs introduce children to foreign language when their minds are most ready for it. These programs are hardly novel: The Lower Merion and T/E School Districts have had them for many years.

Eric supports F.L.E.S. at Radnor for several reasons. Early introduction to a different language is associated with enriched cognitive development. Another benefit is exposure to a different culture. But just as importantly, F.L.E.S. can help prepare students for a changing world.

Eric believes that Radnor needs to join its neighboring school districts and launch a F.L.E.S. program. He will continue the work of a group of faculty and administrators who studied F.L.E.S. and issued a School District report two years ago. Read the report. He welcomes a lively debate of what foreign language Radnor will introduce to elementary students.
